Car loan or leasing: do not compare only the monthly payment

Ownership, down payment, insurance, fees, early repayment and the end of the contract can change the picture more than a small difference in the installment.

In short

When comparing a car loan and a finance lease, look at the total amount you pay, the down payment, interest and fees, mandatory insurance, ownership during the contract, early repayment terms and what happens at the end. The installment is only one line in the comparison.

What you are actually financing

With a loan, the bank provides funds under a contract, while with a finance lease the lessor acquires the chosen vehicle and gives it to the lessee to use. Ownership and rights during the term are not the same.

That affects registration, insurance, disposal of the vehicle and the procedure if you fall behind on your obligations.

Make a table of the total cost

Write down the vehicle price, down payment, all installments, interest, processing, registration of the contract and other fees, mandatory comprehensive insurance, the transfer cost at the end and any residual value. Use the same period and assumptions.

A lower installment can result from a larger down payment, a longer term or an amount left to pay at the end.

Read the restrictions before you need a change

Check the terms for early repayment, selling or replacing the vehicle, late payment, a total loss and travel abroad. For business use, involve your accountant and check the tax treatment.

A seller's verbal example does not replace a document from the bank or leasing company.

The car and the financing are chosen together

If the installment eats up your reserve for servicing, tires, registration and unforeseen costs, the chosen car may not be sustainable. Work out a normal month and a month with a bigger service.

Three things to remember

  1. 01

Ask for the total cost in the same currency and for the same period.

  2. 02

Check who owns the vehicle during the contract and what the insurance terms are.

  3. 03

Read the early repayment and end-of-contract scenarios before signing.
