Calendar and car ahead of a registration expiry date

Registration and vehicle inspection

Registration expiring soon: what to do first and what not to leave for the last day

Good preparation is not collecting papers for weeks, but finding out in time whether the vehicle or the paperwork needs an extra step.

In short

As soon as you notice your registration is close to expiring, check the date, documents and condition of the vehicle, then arrange the vehicle inspection. Do not wait for the last day if you have a warning light, damage, or a change of owner or details, because that may require a service visit or extra paperwork.

The first step is a quick assessment

Look at the expiry date, but also check right away whether the owner, address or any vehicle detail has changed since the last registration. If so, you are probably not dealing with a routine renewal.

Then walk around the vehicle and check the lights, tires, glass, plates and mandatory equipment. If the car brakes, steers or runs differently than usual, report the symptom to a service center; the inspection station is not a place for repairs.

Why the last day creates an unnecessary problem

When everything is in order, the procedure can be simple. The problem starts when you find out on the last day that a bulb has blown, a tire is damaged, a document is illegible or a change of owner needs an extra paper.

A little time to spare is not there so you can wait longer. It lets you deal with a possible fault or missing paperwork without driving on an expired registration and without the pressure of having everything done at once.

Separate the cost estimate from the final calculation

An online calculator can show which information affects the amount and give you a rough idea. The final calculation depends on the exact vehicle details, the policy, and the local and other obligations in force at the time of the procedure.

So write down the details from the registration certificate and ask for the calculation to be confirmed before you pay. A good answer should tell you what is an estimate and what is a confirmed amount.

A simple order, without the rush

First, check which procedure you are doing. Second, look over the vehicle and deal with known symptoms. Third, prepare the documents and details for the calculation. Fourth, enter or arrange your preferred appointment by phone and wait for confirmation.

If you use AC Bugarski, tell the administration office right away the expiry date, the make and model of the vehicle and whether anything has changed in the documents. That shortens the conversation and reduces the chance of getting a list for the wrong case.

Three things to remember

  1. 01

Check the date and your specific procedure, not just a general list.

  2. 02

Leave time for a service visit if the vehicle has a symptom or a visible defect.

  3. 03

A preferred appointment is not confirmed until the administration office confirms it.

Straight answers

Does entering an appointment online mean it is confirmed?

Not necessarily. The appointment is confirmed only once the inspection team confirms availability.

What if the registration has already expired?

Do not drive the vehicle as if it were registered. Call the administration office and explain the situation to get instructions for a legal and safe next step.

Should I go to the service center or the inspection first?

If there is a symptom that may affect safety or a known fault, go to the service center first. The vehicle inspection is not a place for diagnostics and repairs.
